Small Business Ideas Can Grow Big!

By Jan Leow.

So you have decided that starting a home based business is just the thing for you. The next question invariably crosses every business startups wannabies, "What kind of home business should I do?"

Good question too. And so you need a good home business idea, right? Some people have very clear ideas of what they want to do. While others has to bang their heads on the kitchen table top, marching up and down the hallway with their brain in high gear considering what kind of home businesses they should do. And you should too, to actually consider carefully on what you intend to startup because you will be doing it for a very long time. You need to know that what you are doing is right for you. You ought to have the passion, interest, and some knowledge on the business venture you plan to undertake. After all, you can't abandon your home business project halfway and make a detour to start up another entrepreneur project especially if you have put in a lot of time, money and effort into it.

On many business magazines and motivational books and tapes such John C Maxwell, and lately Martha Stewart, you will find that one of the criteria to ensure business longevity is to have passion for the things you are doing. If you feel dead inside struggling day by day to do something you don't like, it will be shear torture to run the day to day business activities. Passion is what drives you on everyday, even if you could not get the support initially from your family and friends chide you for starting such a crazy venture. Yes, some small business ideas can indeed be unconventional, downright stupid looking initially, but when the market get the point of what you are trying to offer, be it a special widget or a new kind of service concept, your business will start to grow.

It can be tough going initially, but you have taken the path less traveled. Granted not many of us can brainstorm an incredible bright idea, but what you need is to spot a need in your area around your neighborhood, something you have experience elsewhere in another country, another state but not capitalized in your area.

Take for example of Bobby and Sahar Hashemi, a brother and sister team who while studying and working in the United States of America, have decided to quit their jobs and return home to Britain to attend to some personal matters. They noticed that there not many good coffee outlets like Starbucks which they had enjoyed while in the States. Spotting an opportunity, they decided to start their own brand of coffee outlets. It was something that they did full of passion and drive, facing many obstacles, overcoming them one by one, sorting through the little details necessary to get their very first outlet up. With the success of one outlet they continued to build upon their first success and startup many more new outlets. Eventually the business, the Coffee Republic, became so successful they were able to go IPO.

The story is very inspiring and if you are interested you should get their book titled, "Anyone Can Do It - Building Coffee Republic from Our Kitchen Table." And read about their experiences. This book not only tells you how they went about starting up their business but also provides tips and guide on becoming an entrepreneur and starting up your very own business starting from your kitchen table at home!

Since this chapter is about brainstorming ideas for your eventual small home business startup, the idea you will have to come out by your own self. Because you will know yourself better than anybody else, don't let your spouse, parent and friends tell you what you ought to do. However do seek their opinions and see what they have to say. However, if their replies are all negative and discouraging, then you are seeking the wrong counsel. In this case whatever they say, just think opposite! Many a business ideas were started because the majority of people said it cannot be done. Take for instance the Wright Brothers, who would have thought that man could fly by building a flying machine, or take Thomas Edison as another example, he tried thousands of time to make a lamp that would work. If they listened to the naysayer, where would that leave us today?

If lacking in quality counsel, search out a mentor if possible; with a mentor you can go much further and probably faster too because of their experiences they can offer you suggestions that can help you determine what you need to do to get started and get going.

Apart from a good mentor, you can start your research for business ideas at your local library or the bookstore and seek out some good business books and magazines. There are plenty of books giving you guidance on how you can start a home business or any other possible kind of business.

The opportunities are out there, and like I said, you don't need a great idea. That spark seldom shows up with most of us, but of course if you do have one, you will need all the drive and determination to carry it through. And even if you don't have a good idea, a borrowed idea is just as good. Because at the end of the day, it is not how good or how great is the business idea, but rather how persistent are you at pursuing your dream of owning your own successful income building home business that you truly enjoy doing while earning a good income from it.

Before I close, here is a quote by George Bernard Shaw:

You see things and say, "Why?"
But I dream things that never were; and I say "Why not?"

So get on going and keep your mind open for ideas and opportunities!
